Destination Guide

Singapore is a compact, highly connected island city and a major regional hub for banking, technology, professional services, communications and multinational companies. English is widely used at work, while Mandarin, Malay and Tamil are also official languages. The culture is multicultural, efficient and generally respectful, with a strong emphasis on punctuality and performance. Residents enjoy excellent public transport, diverse food, shopping, parks and a safe urban lifestyle, although housing and daily expenses can be high. Foreign professionals usually need an employer-sponsored Employment Pass, subject to salary, qualifications and government approval; dependants may qualify for related passes. New arrivals should arrange accommodation, healthcare coverage, banking and tax registration. Central areas offer convenience, while neighbourhoods farther from the business district may provide better value and a more local atmosphere.
