About the employer

Rakuten Group, Inc. is a major Japanese technology and internet-services company headquartered in Tokyo. Founded in 1997, it operates a broad ecosystem covering e-commerce, digital content, fintech, mobile communications, travel, advertising, and online services. Its membership and loyalty platform connects many of these businesses through Rakuten Points, creating opportunities for cross-service partnerships and customer engagement. Rakuten works with merchants, brands, financial institutions, telecommunications customers, and corporate partners in Japan and overseas. The company is known for its fast-moving, entrepreneurial culture and its official English-language working environment in many departments. Employees typically collaborate across business units and are encouraged to develop new services, strengthen partner relationships, and use data to improve commercial performance.

Working in Japan

Japan offers strong opportunities in technology, e-commerce, telecommunications, finance, consulting, manufacturing, tourism, and corporate sales. Tokyo has the largest concentration of international and professional roles, while Osaka, Nagoya, Fukuoka, and Sapporo also provide growing employment markets. Japanese workplace culture values punctuality, preparation, teamwork, hierarchy, and careful communication, although global companies may be more flexible. Lifestyle ranges from dense, convenient city living to quieter regional communities, with excellent public transport, healthcare, and public safety. Living costs are highest in Tokyo, especially rent. Foreign employees generally need an appropriate work visa, commonly an Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services visa, sponsored by an employer. Highly skilled professionals may qualify for preferential points-based routes. Before relocating, arrange housing, residence registration, health insurance, a bank account, and tax procedures. Learning practical Japanese greatly improves daily life and career prospects.
