The Duty Engineer is responsible for keeping hotel facilities, equipment, utilities and guest areas safe, reliable and operational. Requirements typically include a technical diploma or vocational qualification in electrical, mechanical, refrigeration, air-conditioning or building services, along with relevant hotel or commercial-property experience. The candidate should be able to troubleshoot faults, carry out preventive maintenance, respond promptly to breakdowns and supervise contractors when required. Knowledge of health and safety procedures, maintenance documentation and basic building systems is expected. The role requires flexibility for rotating shifts, including nights, weekends and public holidays. Shangri-La will generally look for someone dependable, service-minded, physically capable and able to work calmly under pressure while supporting guests and other hotel departments.
Shangri-La Group is a leading luxury hospitality company founded in Asia and headquartered in Hong Kong. Shangri-La properties are known for attentive service, extensive guest facilities and strong standards in engineering, safety and environmental management. In the Philippines, the group has operated well-known city and resort properties, offering careers in hotel operations, food and beverage, engineering, guest services and administration. Employees commonly receive structured training, staff meals or accommodation depending on the property, healthcare-related benefits and opportunities for internal or international mobility. Exact compensation and benefits vary by hotel, employment status and location. The company generally values professionalism, cultural awareness, teamwork and a genuine commitment to guest comfort.
The Philippines is an archipelago with major employment hubs in Metro Manila, Cebu, Boracay, Palawan and other resort destinations. Hospitality and engineering opportunities are available in hotels, resorts, property developments, hospitals, malls and commercial buildings. Life varies by island: Manila and Cebu offer busy urban living, while resort areas provide a more relaxed environment but may have higher seasonal costs and fewer services. Filipino culture is welcoming, family-oriented and community-minded, with English widely used in workplaces. The tropical climate brings heat, humidity and a rainy season, so reliable transport and suitable housing are important. Foreign applicants generally need an employer-sponsored work visa or permit, while Filipino citizens need standard employment documentation. Relocating to a resort island may involve arranging accommodation, transport, health insurance and local registration. Candidates should confirm the exact property, benefits, accommodation arrangements and permit responsibilities directly with Shangri-La before accepting an offer.
