Working in Malaysia

Malaysia offers opportunities for chefs in luxury resorts, hotels, restaurants and private clubs, particularly in Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Langkawi, Kota Kinabalu and coastal resort areas. The country combines Malay, Chinese, Indian and indigenous traditions, creating a rich food culture and a welcoming environment for an Indian cuisine specialist. Island life in Langkawi, Penang or Sabah can be relaxed, tropical and community-oriented, although imported goods and housing may cost more in resort locations. Malaysia has warm weather, excellent food, modern shopping and good regional travel connections. Foreign employees normally need an employment pass or relevant work permit arranged and sponsored by the employer before starting work. Candidates should confirm accommodation, meals, medical coverage, service charge, contract length and relocation assistance. English is widely used in hotels, while learning basic Malay can make daily life easier.
