Working in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka offers opportunities in apparel and manufacturing, information technology, tourism, logistics, finance, engineering, education, and business services. Colombo and nearby Western Province are the main employment centres, while Kandy, Galle, and other cities provide additional opportunities. The culture combines South Asian traditions, welcoming communities, religious diversity, and strong family ties. Living costs are generally lower than in many Western countries, although Colombo is more expensive; public transport is affordable, and the island offers beaches, mountains, wildlife, and historic sites. Foreign nationals usually need an appropriate employment or residence visa arranged with employer support; a tourist visa does not permit employment. Interns should confirm sponsorship, accommodation, insurance, and work authorisation before travelling. English is widely used in professional workplaces, while Sinhala and Tamil are the principal local languages.
