Working in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka offers opportunities in apparel, finance, information technology, tourism, logistics, manufacturing, engineering, and business services. Colombo is the main commercial center and has the widest range of professional roles, while Kandy, Galle, Katunayake, and other regions also support important industries. The culture is diverse and welcoming, with Sinhala, Tamil, and English commonly used in workplaces. Living costs are generally lower than in many major international cities, although Colombo accommodation can be relatively expensive. The island offers beaches, mountains, wildlife, historic cities, and a relaxed lifestyle, but traffic and occasional power or transport disruptions may occur. Foreign nationals normally need an appropriate employment or residence visa arranged with employer support; tourist status does not permit regular employment. Applicants should confirm current visa rules, medical requirements, taxes, accommodation, and relocation assistance before accepting an offer.
