Working in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka offers employment opportunities in apparel and manufacturing, information technology, tourism, finance, logistics, education and healthcare. Colombo and nearby areas provide the broadest professional market, while Katunayake, Kandy, Galle and other regional centres offer additional industrial and service-sector roles. The culture is welcoming and diverse, with Sinhala, Tamil and English commonly used; respect for religious customs, modest dress and punctuality is appreciated. Lifestyle costs are generally lower than in many Western countries, although Colombo rents and imported goods can be expensive. The island offers beaches, mountains, wildlife, historic cities and a strong food culture. Foreign employees normally need an employer-sponsored residence or employment visa, and requirements can change, so confirmation from the Department of Immigration and Emigration is essential. Secure a written contract, verify accommodation and understand healthcare, taxation and insurance arrangements before relocating.
