Working in Japan

Japan offers strong opportunities in pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, healthcare, technology, manufacturing, finance, and education, particularly in Tokyo, Osaka, Yokohama, and Kobe. The culture values punctuality, respect, teamwork, quality, and careful communication. Daily life is generally safe, convenient, and supported by excellent public transportation, although housing and living costs are higher in Tokyo. Japan has four main islands—Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu, and Shikoku—along with many smaller islands, each offering distinct food, scenery, and traditions. Foreign professionals usually need an appropriate work visa, commonly sponsored by their employer; highly skilled workers may qualify for faster permanent-residence routes. Relocation planning should include housing, health insurance, pension enrollment, tax registration, banking, and language support. Learning basic Japanese is highly beneficial, even in international workplaces.
