Working in Hong Kong

Hong Kong is a compact, energetic destination combining dense urban districts, traditional neighbourhoods, beaches and hiking trails on Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the outlying islands. Hospitality provides opportunities in luxury hotels, restaurants, bakeries, catering, events and tourism, with Cantonese, English and Mandarin commonly used. The culture blends Chinese traditions with international influences; dim sum, festivals, family gatherings and efficient public transport are central to daily life. Residents enjoy excellent food, shopping, nightlife and outdoor activities, but housing is expensive and living space can be limited. Overseas employees generally need a work visa arranged or supported by an employer before starting work. The usual route is an employment visa under Hong Kong's General Employment Policy, requiring a confirmed job, suitable qualifications or experience, and proof that the role and salary are appropriate. Candidates should budget for deposits, transport and initial accommodation when relocating.
