Working in Malaysia

Penang Island is one of Malaysia’s most attractive locations for hospitality careers, with opportunities in hotels, restaurants, tourism, events, wellness and travel sales. George Town offers a lively mix of Malay, Chinese, Indian and international culture, while Batu Feringgi is known for beach resorts and a relaxed coastal lifestyle. Rent, food and transport are generally more affordable than in Kuala Lumpur, although popular beach areas can be pricier. The island has strong local food traditions, heritage architecture, festivals and convenient air connections. Foreign applicants normally need a Malaysian employer to sponsor an Employment Pass; approval depends on qualifications, salary and immigration requirements, and employees should not begin work before approval. Relocating candidates should budget for deposits, medical checks, insurance and initial accommodation. Penang is well suited to people seeking a balance of resort living, urban amenities and career growth.
