Working in Malaysia

Malaysia offers opportunities in hospitality, tourism, sustainability, events, retail, technology and shared services. Popular island destinations include Langkawi, Penang, Tioman, Redang and parts of Sabah, while Kuala Lumpur provides the widest range of corporate and hotel roles. Life on the islands is generally relaxed, warm and community-oriented, with beaches, diving, outdoor activities and a multicultural food scene. Malaysia’s culture combines Malay, Chinese, Indian and Indigenous influences, and English is widely used in business and tourism. Living costs are usually lower than in many international cities, though island accommodation and transport can be more expensive. Foreign employees normally need an employment pass sponsored by the employer; the company typically manages the application after a formal offer. Check current immigration rules, contract benefits, housing, medical coverage and relocation support before accepting a role. Transport and healthcare may be more limited on smaller islands.
