Working in Indonesia

Indonesia offers opportunities in hotels, resorts, restaurants, tourism, finance, technology and education, particularly in Bali, Java, Lombok and the larger cities. Bali is popular with expatriates for its beaches, international community, wellness scene and relaxed lifestyle, although traffic, seasonal tourism and rising housing costs can be challenges. Java, including Jakarta and Surabaya, offers broader corporate opportunities and more urban amenities. Indonesian culture values hospitality, respect for elders, family ties and religious diversity; modest dress and sensitivity to local customs are appreciated. Foreign employees normally need employer sponsorship and an appropriate work and stay permit before starting employment. Tourist visas should not be used for paid work. Relocation usually involves arranging accommodation, health insurance, banking, tax registration and a local mobile connection. Conditions and visa rules can change, so applicants should confirm requirements with the employer and Indonesian immigration authorities.
