Indonesia offers varied opportunities in luxury hotels, resorts, residences, tourism, construction, engineering and safety, especially in Bali, Jakarta, Batam, Lombok and the Riau Islands. Bali is the most popular relocation choice, with an international community, beaches, outdoor activities and a relaxed lifestyle, although housing and traffic can be costly in busy areas. Indonesian culture places importance on courtesy, family, community and religious traditions; local customs should be respected. Employees normally need an employer-sponsored work and residence permit, commonly arranged through the company before starting work. Foreign nationals should not work on a tourist visa and should confirm current immigration rules with the employer or Indonesian authorities. Health insurance, accommodation, transport, flights and tax treatment should be checked in the employment contract. Learning basic Bahasa Indonesia makes everyday life and workplace communication easier.
