The Assistant Psychologist supports psychological assessment, formulation and interventions for people with learning disabilities under the supervision of qualified psychologists. Applicants are generally expected to hold a psychology degree, usually with eligibility for Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership of the British Psychological Society, and have experience working with people with learning disabilities or other complex needs. The role requires strong communication, organisation, report-writing and analytical skills, along with an understanding of confidentiality, safeguarding, equality and person-centred care. Candidates should be able to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams, families and care providers, manage competing priorities and use supervision appropriately. A compassionate, resilient and reflective approach is essential, as is a commitment to NHS values and evidence-based psychological practice.

About the employer

Lancashire & South Cumbria NHS Foundation Trust provides mental health, learning disability, community and wellbeing services across Lancashire and South Cumbria. The Trust supports children, young people and adults through hospitals, community teams, specialist services and outreach programmes. Its work includes psychological care, learning disability support, secure and rehabilitation services, crisis response and community-based treatment. As an NHS Foundation Trust, it combines public healthcare responsibilities with a focus on quality improvement, patient safety, inclusion and partnership working. Employees work alongside psychologists, nurses, doctors, therapists, social workers and support staff in multidisciplinary teams. The organisation promotes compassionate care, professional development, supervision and service-user involvement. This position would suit someone seeking supervised experience in applied psychology while contributing to care for people with learning disabilities in a structured NHS environment.

Working in United Kingdom

The United Kingdom offers opportunities in healthcare, technology, engineering, education, finance and social care, with many NHS roles advertised nationally. Its culture is diverse and generally values privacy, punctuality, equality and clear communication. Lifestyle varies from busy cities to quieter coastal and rural communities; public transport is strongest in major urban areas, while housing costs can be high, especially in London and parts of southern England. The UK has historic towns, national parks, coastline and an active arts and sports scene. Most overseas workers need a visa, commonly the Skilled Worker visa, and must meet sponsorship, salary and English-language requirements; eligibility depends on the occupation and current immigration rules. Applicants should check whether the employer is a licensed sponsor and whether professional registration is required. Relocating involves arranging accommodation, a National Insurance number, banking, healthcare access and tax registration.
