The role normally requires good communication, compassion, reliability and the ability to work respectfully with patients, families and colleagues. Previous healthcare or care experience is beneficial, although relevant training may be provided. Candidates should be able to follow instructions, maintain confidentiality, record information accurately and work effectively under pressure across shifts, including nights, weekends and public holidays. Physical fitness, emotional resilience and a commitment to NHS values, infection prevention and safeguarding are also expected. Appropriate checks, including occupational health clearance and an enhanced DBS check, will normally be required.
Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board is an NHS Wales organisation providing hospital, community, mental health and primary care services across Bridgend, Rhondda Cynon Taf and Merthyr Tydfil. It employs a large multidisciplinary workforce, including doctors, nurses, healthcare support workers, therapists, scientists and administrative professionals. The Health Board serves a diverse population through hospitals such as Prince Charles Hospital, Royal Glamorgan Hospital and Princess of Wales Hospital, alongside community facilities and outreach services. Its work focuses on safe, compassionate, equitable care, improving population health and reducing health inequalities. Employees generally receive NHS terms and conditions, structured development opportunities, pension membership and access to occupational wellbeing support. Roles may involve shift work and movement between clinical departments or sites, depending on service requirements.
The United Kingdom offers substantial opportunities in healthcare, particularly for nursing, support work, allied health, social care and administration. Its culture is diverse and generally values punctuality, privacy, teamwork and respectful communication. Lifestyle varies from busy cities to rural communities, with strong public transport in many areas, although housing and commuting costs can be high. Wales offers attractive countryside, coastal areas and a lower cost of living than some parts of southern England, though local transport may be more limited. International applicants should check whether their occupation and employer qualify for Skilled Worker or Health and Care Worker sponsorship; sponsorship is not automatic for every support-worker vacancy. You will usually need proof of qualifications, identity, English ability where applicable, a criminal-record check and permission to work. Research housing, NHS registration, taxes, travel costs and relocation support before accepting an offer.
