Working in Indonesia

Indonesia offers opportunities across Java, Bali, Sumatra, Kalimantan, Sulawesi and the eastern islands, especially in hotels, resorts, restaurants, tourism, aviation, technology and business services. Jakarta, on Java, is the main corporate centre and has the broadest professional market; Bali is stronger for resort and lifestyle hospitality. Indonesian culture values courtesy, relationships, teamwork and respect for religious diversity. Lifestyle ranges from busy urban living to relaxed coastal communities, with generally affordable food and services, although Jakarta traffic and housing costs can be significant. Foreign employees usually need employer sponsorship and an appropriate work permit and stay visa; working on a tourist visa is not permitted. Candidates should confirm current requirements with the employer and Indonesian immigration authorities. Relocation planning should include accommodation, health insurance, transport, tax, language basics and adjustment to Indonesia’s tropical climate.
