The Sister/Charge Nurse leads the day-to-day delivery of safe, effective and compassionate nursing care across the designated wards or clinical areas. Requirements typically include current NMC registration, substantial post-registration nursing experience, relevant clinical expertise, leadership or management experience, and evidence of continuing professional development. The successful candidate is expected to coordinate staffing, supervise and develop nursing teams, support patient flow, maintain high clinical standards, manage risk, contribute to audits and quality improvement, and work closely with multidisciplinary colleagues. Strong communication, organisation, decision-making and delegation skills are essential, together with a commitment to equality, safeguarding, patient dignity and the values of Leeds Teaching Hospitals.
Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust is one of the largest NHS hospital trusts in the United Kingdom and provides specialist, acute and community healthcare services across Leeds and the wider Yorkshire region. Its services include major teaching hospitals, specialist surgery, cancer care, children’s services, maternity, emergency medicine and nationally recognised clinical programmes. As a teaching and research organisation, the Trust works closely with universities and professional education providers, offering extensive opportunities for training, career development and clinical innovation. The organisation employs a large multidisciplinary workforce and places emphasis on patient-centred care, safety, inclusion, teamwork and continuous improvement. Employees generally benefit from NHS terms and conditions, pension arrangements, annual leave, occupational health support and access to professional development programmes.
The United Kingdom offers extensive opportunities for registered nurses, particularly in NHS hospitals, private healthcare, care homes and community services. UK workplace culture values punctuality, professional accountability, clear communication, teamwork and respect for diversity. Leeds provides a relatively affordable lifestyle compared with London, with good transport links, universities, cultural venues, parks and a lively international community. Weather is changeable, and housing costs vary considerably by location. International nurses usually need NMC registration, proof of English-language ability, a suitable job offer and, where applicable, a Skilled Worker visa sponsored by an approved employer. Relocation normally involves arranging accommodation, immigration documents, identity checks, occupational health screening and registration requirements. The NHS often provides guidance for overseas recruits, although applicants should confirm current visa, registration and salary rules before moving.
