The Sister/Charge Nurse is expected to provide effective clinical leadership and coordinate the day-to-day running of a nursing area at Leeds Teaching Hospitals. Applicants should be a registered nurse with current NMC registration, relevant post-registration experience, strong clinical knowledge and evidence of leading teams or managing a ward environment. The role requires sound judgement, excellent communication, safe staffing oversight and a commitment to compassionate, patient-centred care. The successful candidate will supervise and support nursing staff, contribute to care planning and clinical governance, manage complex situations, promote infection prevention and safeguarding, and work closely with multidisciplinary colleagues. Flexibility, resilience, organisational skills and a commitment to continuous professional development are essential.
Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust is one of the largest NHS trusts in the United Kingdom and provides a wide range of hospital and specialist healthcare services to the people of Leeds, Yorkshire and patients referred from across the country. Its services include emergency care, surgery, maternity, paediatrics, cancer treatment, cardiac care, transplantation and highly specialised clinical services. The trust operates major hospitals including Leeds General Infirmary, St James’s University Hospital, Chapel Allerton Hospital and Seacroft Hospital. As a teaching trust, it works closely with the University of Leeds and supports education, clinical research and professional development. The organisation employs thousands of healthcare and support staff and promotes values centred on patient safety, inclusion, teamwork, respect and improving outcomes for local communities.
The United Kingdom offers substantial opportunities for nurses, particularly within the NHS, private hospitals, community care and social care. Nursing is a regulated profession, so overseas applicants normally need NMC registration, proof of qualifications, English-language evidence and, where applicable, an approved visa. The Health and Care Worker visa can provide a practical route for eligible sponsored roles. Leeds is a diverse, affordable northern city with strong transport links, universities, cultural venues, parks and an active healthcare sector. British workplace culture generally values punctuality, professional accountability, teamwork, equality and clear communication. Lifestyle costs vary, with housing usually more affordable than in London and southeast England, although rents have risen. New arrivals should budget for accommodation, transport, utilities and registration costs, and check current NHS recruitment, immigration and NMC guidance before relocating.
