Working in Malaysia

Malaysia offers opportunities in hotels, resorts, restaurants, tourism, retail, manufacturing, logistics and offshore energy. Bintulu is on the coast of Sarawak on Malaysian Borneo rather than on a resort island, and is known for industry, beaches, national parks and a relaxed lifestyle. Malaysian culture is diverse, combining Malay, Chinese, Indian and indigenous Sarawak traditions, with English commonly used in business and hospitality. Living costs in Bintulu are generally lower than in Kuala Lumpur, although transport is more car-oriented. Foreign employees normally need an employer-sponsored Employment Pass or other approved work authorization before starting work; the employer usually handles the application. Dependents require suitable dependent passes. Applicants should confirm salary, accommodation, medical coverage, relocation support and visa responsibility before accepting an offer. Local food, tropical weather and multicultural communities are major lifestyle attractions.
