Working in Indonesia

Indonesia is an archipelago with very different work and lifestyle options across its islands. Java, especially Jakarta, offers the widest range of technology, finance, startup, and corporate opportunities, although commuting and housing costs can be demanding. Bali attracts international professionals and has a relaxed, creative lifestyle, but local employment opportunities are more concentrated in tourism, hospitality, and digital businesses. Sumatra, Sulawesi, and Kalimantan offer growing opportunities in logistics, energy, plantations, mining, and regional services. Indonesian culture generally values politeness, community, religious diversity, and respectful workplace relationships. Living costs vary substantially; Jakarta is expensive by local standards, while many regional cities are more affordable. Foreign nationals normally need an Indonesian employer to sponsor the appropriate work authorization, including a work permit process and KITAS residence permit. Requirements can change, so candidates should confirm current rules with the employer or Indonesian immigration authorities before relocating.
