The United Arab Emirates is a federation of seven emirates, with Dubai and Abu Dhabi offering the broadest opportunities in banking, investment, consulting, technology, logistics, energy, healthcare, and tourism. The culture combines Gulf traditions with a highly international, expatriate lifestyle. Arabic is the official language, while English is widely used in workplaces and daily business. Dubai offers modern housing, extensive shopping, beaches, restaurants, public transport, and an active social scene, although rent and schooling can be expensive. The UAE has no personal income tax on most employment income, but living costs vary considerably by emirate. Most foreign employees require employer-sponsored residence and work visas, usually arranged after receiving an offer. Relocating often involves document attestation, medical screening, Emirates ID registration, and arranging accommodation and health insurance. New arrivals should respect local laws, dress expectations, religious customs, and rules concerning public behaviour and alcohol.
