Working in Indonesia

Indonesia offers opportunities in banking, fintech, technology, shared services, manufacturing, tourism and logistics. Jakarta, on Java, is the main financial and corporate hub and offers the broadest professional market, though commuting and housing costs can be challenging. Bali is more lifestyle-oriented, with work concentrated in tourism, hospitality, digital services and entrepreneurship. Surabaya and Bandung provide growing business and technology opportunities, while Batam benefits from manufacturing and proximity to Singapore. Indonesian workplaces often value respectful communication, hierarchy, teamwork and relationship-building; English is important in multinational firms. Living costs vary greatly, with Jakarta and Bali generally more expensive than many secondary cities. Foreign employees normally need an employer-sponsored work authorization, including the appropriate work visa and KITAS, and must not work on a tourist visa. Employers typically manage regulatory approvals, so candidates should confirm sponsorship, relocation support, tax treatment and required documents before accepting an offer.
