About the employer

Rakuten is a major Japanese technology and internet services company headquartered in Tokyo. Founded in 1997, it operates a broad ecosystem spanning e-commerce, fintech, mobile communications, digital content, travel, advertising, and online services. The company’s membership and loyalty platform connects many of these businesses through the Rakuten Point program. Rakuten has expanded internationally and employs a diverse, multilingual workforce, with English commonly used in many corporate and technology teams. Its scale and variety of businesses create opportunities in software engineering, data, cybersecurity, product management, finance, marketing, customer support, and corporate governance. As AI becomes increasingly important across its services, roles focused on responsible use, privacy, information security, and regulatory compliance are becoming strategically significant.

Working in Japan

Japan offers strong career opportunities in technology, finance, manufacturing, tourism, healthcare, education, and international business, especially in Tokyo, Osaka, Yokohama, Nagoya, and Fukuoka. Workplace culture often values punctuality, teamwork, respect, preparation, and attention to detail, although international companies may offer more flexible styles. Japan provides excellent public transport, safe cities, reliable healthcare, varied food, and rich cultural experiences. Living costs are highest in Tokyo, while regional cities can be more affordable. Foreign professionals typically need an appropriate work visa, commonly sponsored by their employer; highly skilled workers may qualify for a faster permanent-residence route. Before relocating, arrange housing, resident registration, health insurance, taxes, banking, and mobile service. Learning basic Japanese is highly useful for daily life, even when English is used at work.
