Rakuten Group, Inc. is a major Japanese technology and internet company headquartered in Tokyo. Founded in 1997, it operates a broad ecosystem of services spanning e-commerce, fintech, mobile communications, digital content, travel, advertising, and professional sports. Its flagship Rakuten Ichiba marketplace connects consumers with merchants across Japan and international markets. Rakuten’s business model is built around a membership program and its Rakuten Points ecosystem, encouraging customers to use several related services. The company has a global workforce and promotes an innovative, entrepreneurial working culture. Employees commonly collaborate across business units and countries, particularly in technology, marketplace operations, marketing, data, and financial services. Working at Rakuten can provide exposure to large-scale digital platforms, Japanese business practices, and international growth initiatives.
Japan offers strong opportunities in technology, e-commerce, finance, engineering, hospitality, education, healthcare, and international business. Tokyo has the largest concentration of multinational employers, while Osaka, Nagoya, Fukuoka, Sapporo, and regional cities provide alternatives with lower living costs. Japanese workplaces value punctuality, preparation, teamwork, and respectful communication, although many companies are becoming more flexible and international. Lifestyle options range from dense urban neighborhoods and excellent public transport to quiet rural communities, mountains, beaches, and hot springs. Rent and commuting costs can be high in central Tokyo, but public services are reliable and daily life is generally safe. Most overseas hires need an appropriate work visa, commonly the Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services visa; employers usually support sponsorship. Highly skilled professionals may qualify for preferential routes. Before relocating, arrange housing, health insurance, tax registration, a residence card, and Japanese-language support. Learning practical Japanese greatly improves workplace integration and everyday convenience.
