Indonesia is an archipelago with varied opportunities across Java, Bali, Sumatra, Kalimantan, Sulawesi and the smaller islands. Java, including Surabaya, offers the widest range of hotel, restaurant, business and manufacturing jobs, while Bali is especially strong in tourism and hospitality. Indonesian culture values respect, community, modesty and religious diversity; learning basic Bahasa Indonesia is highly useful. Lifestyle costs vary considerably: Jakarta and Bali can be expensive, while Surabaya is generally more affordable and offers excellent food, shopping and transport links. International employees normally need an employer-sponsored work permit and appropriate limited-stay visa; working on a tourist visa is not permitted. Employers commonly assist with immigration paperwork, contracts and relocation details. Before moving, confirm salary, accommodation, health insurance, tax, leave, working hours and permit responsibilities. Indonesia’s tropical climate, traffic, seasonal rain and regional customs should also be considered.
