The Sous Chef supports the Executive Chef in managing daily kitchen operations, food preparation, service delivery and team supervision. Requirements typically include culinary training, several years of professional kitchen experience, strong knowledge of international cuisine, food safety, hygiene and cost control. Experience in a luxury hotel or high-volume restaurant is advantageous. The successful candidate should demonstrate leadership, organisation, creativity and the ability to maintain consistent quality under pressure. Responsibilities include supervising chefs, coordinating service, checking ingredients and presentation, training team members, monitoring inventory and ensuring compliance with Shangri-La standards. Flexibility to work shifts, weekends and public holidays is expected.
Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts is a Hong Kong-founded luxury hospitality group operating hotels, resorts and residences across Asia, the Middle East, Europe, North America and other destinations. The group is recognised for warm Asian-inspired hospitality, high service standards and well-established properties in major cities and resort locations. Shangri-La Singapore is a prominent luxury hotel set in extensive landscaped grounds near Orchard Road, offering guest rooms, suites, restaurants, event facilities, wellness services and recreational amenities. The company places strong emphasis on guest satisfaction, employee development, teamwork and operational excellence. Culinary employees typically work in a multicultural environment serving international travellers, corporate guests and local customers. Benefits and conditions vary by position, but may include meals, uniforms, training, medical coverage and staff discounts, subject to the employment package.
Singapore is a compact, highly developed island city-state with strong opportunities in hospitality, tourism, food and beverage, finance, technology, healthcare and logistics. Its multicultural society blends Chinese, Malay, Indian and international influences, reflected in its festivals, languages and outstanding food culture. The lifestyle is safe, efficient and fast-paced, with excellent public transport, shopping, beaches, parks and diverse neighbourhoods. Living costs, especially rent, are relatively high, so accommodation and benefits should be considered carefully when accepting a hotel role. Foreign employees generally need an employer-sponsored work pass, such as an Employment Pass, S Pass or Work Permit, depending on qualifications, salary and occupation; the employer normally submits the application. New arrivals should arrange a local bank account, mobile service, health coverage and suitable housing. Singapore’s tropical climate is hot and humid year-round, with frequent rain, so lightweight clothing and adaptability are important.
