The Service Manager-Engineering, also known as Duty Engineer, oversees daily hotel engineering operations, ensuring the safe and reliable performance of electrical, mechanical, plumbing, air-conditioning, fire protection and building systems. Candidates are generally expected to hold a diploma or technical qualification in engineering, facilities management or a related field, with relevant hotel or commercial property experience. Strong troubleshooting, preventive-maintenance and team-supervision skills are required. The role involves responding to breakdowns, coordinating contractors, monitoring energy use, maintaining safety standards and supporting hotel departments during operational issues. The successful candidate should be able to work shifts, remain calm during emergencies, communicate clearly and comply with Malaysian regulations and Shangri-La service standards.
Shangri-La Group is a leading luxury hospitality company headquartered in Hong Kong, operating hotels, resorts and related businesses across Asia, the Middle East, Europe, North America and Australia. Its portfolio includes the Shangri-La, Kerry, JEN and Traders brands, together with a reputation for warm Asian hospitality and high service standards. Shangri-La properties typically provide accommodation, restaurants, meeting facilities, wellness services and extensive engineering and facilities operations. In Malaysia, the group has established hotels and resorts serving business and leisure travellers in major destinations. Employees commonly work in multicultural teams and are expected to demonstrate professionalism, guest awareness, operational discipline and a strong commitment to safety. Engineering team members support guest comfort and business continuity by maintaining critical building systems, responding quickly to faults and contributing to efficient, sustainable hotel operations.
Malaysia offers opportunities in hotel engineering, facilities management, construction, manufacturing, technology and tourism, especially in Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Johor, Langkawi, Kota Kinabalu and Melaka. Its island lifestyle ranges from Langkawi’s beaches and resorts to Penang’s food, heritage and lively urban culture, while Sabah and Sarawak offer nature, diving and outdoor activities. Daily life is generally affordable compared with many international destinations, although rent in Kuala Lumpur and popular resort areas can be higher. Malaysia is multicultural, with Malay, Chinese, Indian and indigenous influences; English is widely used in workplaces. Foreign employees normally need an employer-sponsored Employment Pass, with approval handled through Malaysian immigration authorities. Employers often assist with documentation, relocation and accommodation, but candidates should confirm benefits and dependent arrangements. Island locations may have fewer services and higher transport costs, so access to healthcare, schools and airports should be checked before relocating.
