About the employer

Founded in 1971, the group is known for its Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts brand, as well as brands such as Kerry Hotels, JEN by Shangri-La and Traders. Its portfolio covers luxury and upscale accommodation, dining, wellness, meetings and events. Shangri-La emphasizes Asian hospitality, personalized service and long-term relationships with guests, colleagues and business partners. Corporate functions in Hong Kong support the group's global operations, including legal, finance, development, technology, human resources and commercial activities. A corporate counsel working there can expect exposure to cross-border transactions, hotel operations, disputes, regulatory matters and stakeholder management across multiple jurisdictions.

Working in Hong Kong

Hong Kong offers strong opportunities in legal, finance, hospitality, technology, professional services and international business, with many regional headquarters based in the city. Its culture combines Chinese traditions with international influences, and Cantonese is widely spoken while English is common in professional settings. Lifestyle options range from dense urban neighborhoods, restaurants and shopping to beaches, hiking trails and outlying islands. Housing is expensive, especially on Hong Kong Island and in Kowloon, although public transport is excellent and commuting from the New Territories can reduce costs. Foreign professionals generally need an employment visa sponsored by their employer, with approval depending on qualifications, salary and the availability of a genuine role. Dependants may usually accompany approved visa holders. New arrivals should arrange accommodation, health insurance, banking and tax registration, and check current immigration requirements before relocating.
