Hong Kong is a compact, highly connected city with a distinctive mix of Chinese traditions and international influences. Although best known for its urban island and Kowloon districts, it also includes quieter outlying islands and rural areas. Hospitality, retail, finance, technology, logistics, healthcare and education provide varied employment opportunities, with hotels concentrated around Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the airport. Life is fast-paced, convenient and relatively expensive, especially for accommodation. Cantonese is widely spoken, while English is common in tourism and business. Residents enjoy excellent public transport, diverse food, hiking trails, beaches and vibrant festivals. Foreign employees generally need an appropriate employment visa sponsored by an employer before starting work; the company usually supports the application. Applicants should prepare qualifications, references, a valid passport and medical or background documents where requested. Research housing, healthcare, taxes and employment conditions before relocating.
