Hong Kong is a highly connected city and coastal territory rather than a single island, with Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories linked by an efficient MTR, bus and ferry network. Hospitality, retail, aviation, finance, logistics, healthcare and technology provide substantial employment opportunities. The culture combines Cantonese traditions, international influences, festivals, excellent food and a fast-paced working style. Housing can be expensive and compact, although public transport is affordable and reliable. New arrivals should budget for accommodation, deposits, transport and daily costs. Overseas workers generally need an employment visa sponsored by a Hong Kong employer before starting work; requirements include a confirmed job, suitable qualifications or experience and proof that the role cannot readily be filled locally. Applicants should verify visa, contract, medical and insurance details with the employer and Hong Kong Immigration Department before relocating.
