The Engineering Design Manager will lead global building-design risk and recovery initiatives for Amazon’s facilities. The role typically requires an engineering, architecture, construction, or related degree; substantial experience managing complex building-design, resilience, risk, or capital-project programs; and strong knowledge of building codes, life-safety standards, structural and MEP systems, and project delivery. The successful candidate should be comfortable working across countries and time zones, coordinating consultants and internal stakeholders, reviewing technical designs, identifying vulnerabilities, developing recovery strategies, and communicating recommendations to senior leadership. Strong program management, analytical, documentation, negotiation, and influencing skills are expected, along with a practical approach to safety, reliability, cost, and schedule.
Amazon is a global technology and commerce company operating online retail marketplaces, cloud computing, logistics, digital media, advertising, consumer devices, and artificial intelligence services. Founded in 1994, it serves customers and businesses worldwide through brands and platforms including Amazon.com, Amazon Web Services, Prime, Kindle, and Alexa. Its operations depend on a large network of fulfilment centres, offices, data centres, transportation facilities, and corporate sites. Amazon is known for a customer-focused culture, high operating standards, rapid innovation, and data-driven decision-making. Employees are generally expected to take ownership, work independently, challenge processes constructively, and deliver measurable results. In this role, the company’s focus is on making its global building portfolio safer, more resilient, and better prepared for physical risks, disruptions, and recovery requirements.
Australia offers strong opportunities in engineering, construction, infrastructure, facilities management, logistics, technology, mining, healthcare, and renewable energy. Major employment hubs include Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, and Canberra. Workplace culture is generally professional but comparatively informal, with emphasis on safety, collaboration, practical communication, and work-life balance. Lifestyle varies from busy city living to coastal, regional, and outdoor-oriented communities; housing costs are highest in Sydney and Melbourne. Skilled professionals commonly need an employer-sponsored visa, such as the Skills in Demand visa, or may qualify through skilled migration pathways, depending on occupation, experience, English ability, and eligibility. Applicants should check current requirements with the Australian Department of Home Affairs. Relocation planning should include health insurance, tax, housing, school arrangements, transport, and professional recognition where relevant.
