Working in Japan

Japan offers opportunities in pharmaceuticals, manufacturing, technology, healthcare, logistics, and services, although Japanese language ability is often important outside multinational companies. Workplace culture commonly values punctuality, teamwork, respect for hierarchy, careful procedures, and long-term commitment. Lifestyle varies from major cities to quieter regional areas such as Yamaguchi, where housing and daily costs may be lower and access to nature is excellent. Japan has efficient public transport, high-quality healthcare, and generally safe communities, but employees should plan for commuting and limited English services in rural locations. Foreign workers usually need an appropriate work visa sponsored by an employer; contract roles must meet immigration requirements and may have different renewal conditions. Relocating typically involves securing housing, residence registration, health insurance, pension enrollment, and a bank account. Hikari is near the Seto Inland Sea and offers a calmer lifestyle than Tokyo or Osaka.
