Working in Japan

Japan offers strong opportunities in pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, advanced manufacturing, technology, healthcare, engineering, and research. Major employment centers include Tokyo and Yokohama, while Osaka, Kyoto, Kobe, and Fukuoka also have growing international business communities. Fujisawa is a coastal city in Kanagawa, close to Tokyo and known for beaches, convenient rail links, and a relaxed residential atmosphere. Japanese workplaces value punctuality, teamwork, respect, preparation, and attention to detail; English is common in multinational companies, though Japanese improves everyday integration and career options. Living costs are highest around Tokyo, particularly for housing, while public transport is reliable and healthcare is accessible. Foreign professionals generally need an employer-sponsored work visa, commonly under an Engineer, Specialist in Humanities, International Services, or highly skilled professional category. Relocating typically requires securing housing, registering an address, obtaining health insurance, and arranging tax and pension procedures. Families should also investigate schools, childcare, and language support.
