Working in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka offers opportunities in apparel manufacturing, engineering, information technology, tourism, logistics, finance, healthcare and renewable energy. The country combines modern cities with beaches, mountain landscapes, wildlife parks and historic sites. Colombo is the main commercial centre and has the widest selection of professional roles, while areas such as Katunayake, Biyagama and Kandy also host major industrial employers. English is widely used in business, alongside Sinhala and Tamil. Living costs are generally lower than in many international business hubs, although housing in Colombo can be comparatively expensive. Foreign nationals normally need an employment visa or residence approval sponsored by a local employer; working on a tourist visa is not permitted. Relocating employees should arrange an employment contract, passport, medical documentation and accommodation before arrival. Traffic, tropical weather and occasional power or internet interruptions are practical considerations, but public transport, private rentals and local services are widely available.
