Working in Hong Kong

Hong Kong offers strong opportunities in hotels, restaurants, retail, finance, logistics, technology and professional services, although competition and living costs are high. Its culture combines Cantonese traditions, international influences, fast-paced city life and excellent food. Residents enjoy efficient public transport, shopping, nightlife, hiking trails, beaches and easy access to nearby islands and mainland China. Accommodation is compact and expensive, so many employees share flats or live in districts connected by the MTR. Foreign employees generally need an employment visa arranged by an eligible sponsor, with proof of qualifications, a genuine job offer and suitable salary; dependants may qualify for dependant visas. Employers usually assist with documentation, but applicants should confirm current Immigration Department rules. Cantonese is valuable for local guest-facing roles, while English is widely used in international hotels.
