Working in Hong Kong

Hong Kong offers strong opportunities in hotels, tourism, retail, finance, technology, logistics and professional services. The city combines Cantonese traditions, international influences, efficient public transport, dense urban neighbourhoods and easy access to beaches, hiking trails and outlying islands. Lifestyle is fast-paced, convenient and generally safe, though accommodation can be expensive. Cantonese is widely used, while English is common in business and hospitality; Mandarin is also valuable. Overseas employees normally need an employment visa sponsored by a Hong Kong employer, and applications generally require a confirmed job, suitable qualifications or experience and proof that the role cannot readily be filled locally. Employers may assist with documentation, but approval is handled by Hong Kong Immigration. Before relocating, candidates should budget for rent, deposits, healthcare, transport and visa-related costs.
