Typical requirements include a diploma or degree in food science, microbiology, hospitality or a related field, along with practical knowledge of HACCP, food-safety legislation and hygiene auditing. The successful candidate should be observant, organised and confident when conducting inspections, documenting findings and training colleagues. Good communication skills, attention to detail and the ability to work with different departments are important.
Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts is a leading luxury hospitality group founded in Hong Kong, with hotels, resorts and city properties across Asia, the Middle East, Europe, North America and other international markets. The group is known for warm Asian hospitality, attentive service and well-developed food and beverage, wellness and events operations. Its Malaysian portfolio has included prominent properties in Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Sabah and other destinations. Shangri-La generally places strong emphasis on guest satisfaction, service standards, employee training, sustainability and operational consistency. A Hygiene Executive would work with culinary, stewarding, housekeeping and engineering teams to protect guests and employees through effective food-safety and sanitation systems. Duties may include HACCP monitoring, internal inspections, staff coaching and liaison with local authorities.
Malaysia offers opportunities in hotels, resorts, restaurants, tourism, retail and business services, with particularly strong demand in Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Langkawi, Kota Kinabalu and Sabah. Island locations such as Langkawi and Penang provide a relaxed lifestyle, beaches, outdoor activities and multicultural communities, although career options and public transport can be more limited than in Kuala Lumpur. Malaysian culture blends Malay, Chinese, Indian and indigenous traditions, and English is widely used in hospitality workplaces. Living costs vary; accommodation and transport are usually more affordable outside central Kuala Lumpur. Foreign employees normally need an employment pass arranged and sponsored by the hiring company before starting work. Candidates should confirm visa eligibility, accommodation, medical requirements, taxes and relocation support directly with Shangri-La. Malaysia has warm, humid weather year-round, with monsoon conditions varying by region.
