Duties may include personal care, household assistance, meal preparation, medication reminders, transport, companionship and support with daily activities. Candidates are expected to be compassionate, reliable, patient and respectful, with good communication skills and the ability to work independently. A full or restricted New Zealand driver licence, reliable transport, the right to work in New Zealand and the ability to pass background and health checks are commonly required. Previous experience in aged care, disability support, mental health or community services is helpful. Relevant qualifications, such as a Health and Wellbeing Certificate, may be preferred or supported through training.
Healthcare New Zealand is a nationwide provider of community-based health and support services. It works with older people, disabled people, people living with mental health challenges and others who need assistance to live safely and independently. Its services may include home support, personal care, rehabilitation, nursing, disability support and community participation. The organisation employs support workers and health professionals across New Zealand, including regional communities such as the Wairarapa. Its approach focuses on person-centred care, dignity, choice and helping clients achieve their goals in their own homes and communities. Employees generally work as part of a wider care team while building trusted relationships with clients and families. Training, supervision and opportunities to gain recognised health and wellbeing qualifications may be available, depending on the role and employment arrangement.
New Zealand offers opportunities in healthcare, aged care, disability support, construction, agriculture, hospitality, technology and education. The North Island contains Auckland, Wellington and many major employers, while the South Island offers strong opportunities in Christchurch, Queenstown, Dunedin and regional health services. Masterton is in the Wairarapa, on the North Island, with a relaxed lifestyle, lower housing costs than the largest cities and access to vineyards, farmland and outdoor recreation. New Zealand culture values friendliness, equality, community involvement and work-life balance; Māori culture and Te Tiriti o Waitangi are important parts of national life. Living costs can be high, especially for housing and transport. People moving for work should check Immigration New Zealand visa rules, employer accreditation and whether their occupation qualifies for a work or residence pathway. Arrange suitable housing, tax registration, banking, healthcare cover and transport before relocating.
