Working in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka offers opportunities in hotels, resorts, travel companies, restaurants, tourism sales, events, technology, finance and education, particularly in Colombo, the southern coast, Kandy and the Cultural Triangle. The culture blends Sinhalese, Tamil, Muslim and colonial influences, with strong traditions of hospitality, family life, religion and community. Lifestyle is generally relaxed, affordable and outdoors-oriented, with beaches, surfing, wildlife, mountains and diverse food. English is widely used in tourism, while Sinhala or Tamil can help with local relationships. Foreign nationals normally need an employment visa or residence permission sponsored by the employer; working on a tourist visa is not permitted. Candidates should confirm current requirements with the Sri Lankan Department of Immigration and their employer. Relocation costs, accommodation, transport and medical insurance should be discussed before accepting an offer. Coastal areas are warm and humid, and the island has regional monsoon seasons.
