Working in Indonesia

Indonesia offers opportunities across Java, Bali, Sumatra, Sulawesi and Lombok. Jakarta, on Java, has the broadest market for hotel, engineering, finance, technology and service jobs; Bali is especially strong in tourism, restaurants, wellness and resort operations. Indonesian workplaces value politeness, teamwork, punctuality and respect for senior colleagues, while English is useful in international hotels. Lifestyle varies from busy urban living in Jakarta to a slower, more outdoor-focused pace on Bali or Lombok. Rent, transport and food costs depend heavily on the island and neighborhood. Foreign workers generally need an employer-sponsored work authorization and appropriate limited-stay visa or residence permit; tourist visas do not authorize employment. Employers normally manage the immigration process, so verify the contract, sponsorship, accommodation and insurance before relocating. Learn basic Bahasa Indonesia, research local customs and allow time for traffic, humidity and the rainy season when planning your move.
