Working in Hong Kong

Hong Kong is a compact, energetic international city made up of Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories, with numerous outlying islands. Hospitality, retail, finance, aviation, technology and professional services offer broad employment opportunities. The culture combines Cantonese traditions, international influences, festivals, excellent food and efficient public transport. Lifestyle options range from dense urban neighbourhoods and nightlife to beaches, hiking trails and quieter island communities. Housing is expensive, so many employees share apartments or live in areas connected by the MTR. Foreign nationals normally need an approved employment visa sponsored by an employer before starting work; qualifications, experience and a confirmed offer are generally required. New arrivals should arrange accommodation, health coverage, banking and an identity card after arrival. Cantonese is valuable locally, while English is widely used in business and hospitality.
