Working in Hong Kong

Hong Kong is a compact, energetic destination made up of Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories, with excellent public transport and a busy international lifestyle. Hospitality offers opportunities in luxury hotels, restaurants, catering, events, clubs and tourism, although competition is strong and working hours can include weekends and public holidays. Cantonese is widely spoken; English is common in hotels, while Mandarin is also useful. Rent is high, so many newcomers share accommodation or live farther from the city centre. Employers normally arrange an employment visa through Hong Kong’s General Employment Policy, requiring a confirmed job, qualifications and proof of suitable salary. Do not begin work before approval. Relocation planning should cover accommodation deposits, transport, medical insurance and local registration. Beaches, hiking trails, islands and excellent food provide a good balance to city life.
