Working in Hong Kong

Hong Kong offers strong opportunities in hospitality, finance, technology, retail, professional services and communications. Its international business environment makes it attractive for experienced marketing and public relations professionals, particularly those who understand the Greater China market. Life is fast-paced, convenient and highly urban, with excellent public transport, shopping, dining and cultural attractions. Housing can be expensive, although neighbourhoods outside Central may offer better value. Popular areas include Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories, each with different lifestyles and commuting options. Foreign professionals generally need an employment visa sponsored by their employer, and applicants must demonstrate relevant qualifications and experience. Employers often assist with visa paperwork and relocation. Cantonese is widely spoken, while English is common in business; Mandarin is increasingly useful. Healthcare and public services are well developed, but newcomers should budget carefully for rent, schooling and daily expenses.
