Working in Indonesia

Indonesia offers opportunities across Bali, Java, Lombok and other tourist islands, particularly in hotels, resorts, restaurants, construction, engineering, tourism and business services. Bali is popular with international workers and provides a relaxed lifestyle, beaches, outdoor activities and a large expatriate community, although housing and traffic can be expensive. Java, including Jakarta and Surabaya, offers broader corporate opportunities and urban conveniences. Indonesian culture values politeness, community, religious awareness and respectful workplace relationships; customs differ between regions. Employees should expect tropical weather, varied transport and a generally affordable cost of living outside major tourist centres. Foreign nationals normally need employer sponsorship and an appropriate work permit and visa; working on a tourist visa is not permitted. Employers usually guide the application process, but candidates should confirm current immigration rules, contract benefits, accommodation and taxation before relocating.
