Working in Malaysia

Malaysia is a diverse country with opportunities in hotels, resorts, tourism, retail, technology, manufacturing and professional services. Island destinations such as Langkawi, Penang, Tioman, Redang and Kota Kinabalu attract hospitality workers, while Kuala Lumpur and Johor offer broader corporate employment. Malaysian culture blends Malay, Chinese, Indian and indigenous traditions, with English widely used in business and tourism. The lifestyle ranges from busy city living to relaxed coastal communities, with generally affordable food and good regional travel connections. Living costs are higher in Kuala Lumpur and popular resort areas. Foreign employees normally need an Employment Pass sponsored and arranged by the employer before starting work; eligibility depends on salary, qualifications and immigration approval. Applicants should confirm whether accommodation, flights, insurance and relocation assistance are included. Research local transport, healthcare, banking, weather and accommodation before moving, especially for island-based roles where services may be more limited.
