Working in Indonesia

Indonesia offers very different lifestyles across its islands. Java, especially Jakarta, has the strongest corporate, convention and hotel market, with extensive career opportunities but heavy traffic and a fast-paced urban lifestyle. Bali is more relaxed and internationally oriented, with strong resort, wedding, events and tourism employment, although housing costs can be high in popular areas. Lombok and destinations in eastern Indonesia offer quieter surroundings and growing resort opportunities. Indonesian culture values hospitality, respect, community and religious diversity; modest dress and sensitivity toward local customs are important. Living costs vary considerably by island, and English is common in international hotels but Indonesian is useful for daily life. Foreign employees generally need employer sponsorship and an appropriate work and stay permit, commonly arranged through the company. Candidates should confirm visa eligibility, tax obligations, accommodation, insurance and relocation benefits before accepting an offer.
