Working in Malaysia

Malaysia offers opportunities in hotels, resorts, restaurants, tourism, retail, healthcare, technology and shared services, especially in Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Langkawi, Kota Kinabalu and Johor. Its island destinations provide a relaxed lifestyle, beaches, water activities and multicultural communities, while larger cities offer better transport, shopping and international schools. Malay, English and Chinese languages are commonly heard, and local culture blends Malay, Chinese, Indian and indigenous traditions. Foreign hires normally need an employment pass sponsored by the employer; approval depends on the role, salary and current immigration rules, so candidates should not work before approval. Relocation costs, accommodation and transport vary widely by location. Langkawi and Penang suit people seeking island living, although some specialist services and career options are more limited than in Kuala Lumpur. New arrivals should arrange a valid passport, medical checks, local banking and suitable health insurance.
