Working in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka offers opportunities in apparel, tourism, information technology, finance, logistics, engineering, healthcare, and business services. Colombo and nearby urban areas have the widest range of professional roles, while manufacturing opportunities are also available in regional industrial zones. The culture is welcoming and diverse, combining Sinhala, Tamil, Muslim, and international influences. Living costs are generally lower than in many Western countries, although Colombo is more expensive than smaller cities. The island provides beaches, mountains, wildlife, historic sites, and reliable domestic transport, with warm weather year-round. Foreign nationals normally need an appropriate employment visa or residence approval sponsored through the employer; a tourist visa does not permit employment. Interns should confirm sponsorship, accommodation, insurance, taxes, and work authorisation before relocating. English is widely used in professional workplaces, while Sinhala and Tamil are the main local languages.
