Working in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka offers opportunities in apparel, manufacturing, IT, finance, tourism, logistics, healthcare, and business services, with Colombo and nearby industrial zones providing the widest choice. The country has a warm tropical climate, diverse communities, strong family traditions, and a culture influenced by Sinhalese, Tamil, Muslim, and colonial heritage. Lifestyle costs are generally lower than in many Western countries, although Colombo is more expensive than regional towns. Public transport is affordable, while traffic can be challenging. Foreign nationals normally need an appropriate employment or residence visa, sponsored or supported by the employer; tourist status should not be used for employment. Applicants should confirm current immigration rules before relocating. English is widely used in professional workplaces, while Sinhala and Tamil are the main local languages.
