Working in Hong Kong

Hong Kong offers strong opportunities in hospitality, finance, technology, retail, marketing, communications and international business. Its culture combines Chinese traditions with global influences, and Cantonese, English and Mandarin are widely used in professional settings. Life is energetic and convenient, with excellent public transport, diverse food, shopping, arts and easy access to beaches, hiking trails and nearby islands. Housing can be expensive, particularly in central districts, so many professionals consider areas such as Kowloon, the New Territories or Hong Kong Island’s outer neighborhoods. Most overseas professionals need an employment visa sponsored by their employer; applications generally require a confirmed job, suitable qualifications and proof of experience. Dependants may usually apply to join approved visa holders. New arrivals should arrange accommodation, healthcare coverage, a local bank account and an Octopus transport card. Weather is subtropical, with hot, humid summers and occasional typhoons.
